Altoona Area School District

Stevens Building Parent Choice SUCCESS Program

The Altoona Area School District recognizes that no one school or approach to education can satisfy the needs and aspirations of all students and parents. Progressive communities recognize this and welcome a variety of education approaches. The secondary Parent Choice, SUCCESS Program, will provide a school that will meet the needs of students who are struggling to find success in the traditional high school or junior high school environment. We offer flexible scheduling, place and emphasis on educational goals, provide daily counseling with our school counselor, and unique programming that will allow students to find their best academic path toward success.

The program will be an option for any student who has been unsuccessful in a regular school building with collaboration from all school district personnel.  An emphasis of the program will be parent, student, and school communication and collaboration. Each student will have a required group or individual community service requirement, the ability to have co-op or school to work opportunities, the opportunity to access programming at the GACTC, and the option of developing an independent learning opportunity for credit in an area of interest.

The secondary alternative programming staff will work with both Kimmel Alternative students and the SUCCESS program students, AASD curriculum will be delivered in person, virtually or a hybrid of the two platforms. Students will each have a schedule that is unique to them and keeps them on track for cohort graduation. Credit recovery will also be provided through our ACA program.

Program Goals include:

  1. To provide opportunities for students to establish their own goals and to accept individual responsibility for the development and successful completion of their learning program.
  2. TO provide guidance programming with academic and behavioral support through the development of individual goals and personal needs.
  3. To provide students with transitional programming that prepares them for life after high school.
  4. To provide students the opportunity to experience and engage in community service and to learn how to be a productive member of society.
  5. To provide students with a variety of learning opportunities that meet student needs, interests, abilities, and learning styles.
  6. To meet the curriculum requirements established by PDE and AASD.
